A Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) measures how well and how fast electrical signals travel through your nerves. During the test, small electrodes are placed on your skin over the nerve being examined, and a mild electrical impulse is applied to stimulate the nerve. The speed and strength of the resulting signal is recorded to assess nerve function.
This test is commonly used to diagnose conditions involving nerve damage or dysfunction, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, sciatica, and other nerve-related disorders. During the test, you may feel a brief tingling or mild muscle twitch each time the impulse is applied — this is normal and only lasts a moment.
